I have been writing the Synthetic Shift Series, beginning in the fourth quarter of 2025, exploring how the new Synthetic Shift, from our old, human labor-based economy, is going to give way to a new, Synthetic Economy, driven by an endless supply of cognitive labor (AI) and physical labor (Robotics). While experts warn of massive unemployment, and old school thinking promises new jobs because, you know, technology always creates more jobs than it eliminates, the truth is more complex. The Synthetic Economy offers tremendous opportunity and prosperity, but it requires that policy makers collaborate with thought leaders in multiple fields to map out the future before it arrives, otherwise we risk massive unemployment and social disruption.
We offer a modest policy proposal to inspire policy makers, AI technologists, and thought leaders in multiple disciplines, to come together and address the urgent need to begin planning the future economy today.
